I think that was more a case of a woman playing an androgynous character with a dubbed male voice. There are also films (The Prince of Egypt, for one) where the voice of God is portrayed as a mixture of male and female voices. Which makes sense because - even though they're both commonly referred to as "he" - God and Satan would both be asexual.
Although you could argue that calling Smaug a "he" might have been an assumption on the part of the dwarves, since I doubt any of them stopped to carefully inspect the dragon's hind parts while he/she/it was chasing them away from the mountain. ![]() Just a puny guy on a blue-green ball Got no problem with that thought at all ~ "Beautiful Haze", SJD |

I think Ron Perlman the voice of Hellboy would be the perfect Smaug

You mean he sounded different as Hellboy than he usually does? I can't say I noticed.

Not my idea, but I read this suggestion for Bilbo on another site: Martin Freeman.
He has the look and has some maturity. I always thought Elijah Wood was way too young for Frodo.

James McAvoy comes to mind. I've only seen him as Mr Tumnus, but I suspect he could be Hobbity.

I've always imagined Smaug's voice being somewhat friendly and pleasant (how is someone supposed to fall under dragon-spell while being venomously
hissed at?) Of course, he goes all kinds of evil when he discovers his cup missing and forgets himself. Something sort of grandfatherly, maybe. A sound that
says it could never in a million years do you any harm...and then it does.
I can't think of anyone specific right now, that's just the impression I've always had in my mind of him. Maybe Gary Oldman? I suppose an Anthony Hopkins or Kelsey Grammer might be able to pull off the effect I'm looking for too.

EDIT: Btw, Martin Freeman would be perfect as young Bilbo. Great choice, I can totally see him all befuddled by those pesky dwarves on his doorstep. In fact, he'd be so perfect I'm going to modify my famous "The Hobbit" poster with Freeman on it. ![]()

To be perfectly honest Nemesis, I tried it and it didn't look good at all.
So as not to sully my reputation as Master of Photoshop I won't post it until I'm happy with it. In the mean time you can all enjoy the original...
